This technique is perfect to bait links although I see one flaw – while humor is something that may be natural to some people, not everyone has the gift of expressing humor. I have seen so many bloggers try their hand at humor and fail miserably. There is nothing worse than trying to be humorous and having your jokes fall flat, don’t you think?

If you are not a natural stand up comedian, do not despair, though. I have seen many other blogs which make use of pictures and videos – which they collect from all over the place. This technique works just as well. A word of caution, however: make sure that you acknowledge your sources. Mention the person, the site, or the group which created that video or cartoon strip. Otherwise, you are merely plagiarizing other people’s content and you know that that is a big no no.

Another important note – you can use humorous anecdotes, photos, cartoons, and videos and still convey the core message of your blogs. This is particularly applicable to niche blogs. For example, if your blog is all about religion, you are sure to find a lot of funny content on religion. Use these to supplement your posts and get the attention of other bloggers who would eventually link to your blog.

Uniquely interesting titles are good. When they are outrageous and cryptic, they do tend to get more clicks as human readers would wonder what the post might be about. However, if you focus solely on this consideration, your post might not even make it to the first 5 pages of the SERPs. And what good will your cryptic title do you when people cannot find it in the first place?

My suggestion is this – try to work on your post title getting to the top of the SERPs. At the same time, don’t hold back on your creativity. So how can you work on getting to the top?

One way would be to incorporate keywords into your post title. The idea is to make use of words or phrases that are commonly used in searches. Now how do you find this out? Make use of keyword tools – there are so many out there! You can even use Google’s free tool, Google AdWords Keyword Tool. If you wish to do so, you can search for other keyword tools that can help you figure out which keywords are most used for certain topics. Once you have determined these words, then you can craft a post title that is engaging and SEO-friendly at the same time.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the flaws in this technique. I don’t know if you remember but there used to be a lot of pages wherein you would simply see a mere jumble of words and phrases which were put together, repeated, and then repeated again. This resulted in trash content. If you have no idea what I am talking about, take a look around and I am sure you will still find some of those pages wherein the text does not really make sense – it’s just a mess of words thrown together.

Unsurprisingly, the search engines got wise to this practice and keywords began to be useless – or so some said. I believe, however, that keywords still bear much weight. By knowing how to use them properly, you will be able to make the most out of them.

Here are some quick ideas, which we will discuss in more detail next time – keywords in post titles, keywords in headers, secondary keywords, and anchor texts.

There are a lot of times when it comes to RSS feeds that publishing your partial content instead of the full one makes a lot more sense. For example if you are an online magazine or a news site and have RSS feeds it might be a good idea to simply publish partial content to protect your content from piracy. Or if you are a cooking site or blog and like to publish new recipes. Instead of putting the entire recipe on the feed you can simply put a list of new available recipes and a summary or intro along with it. Subscribers can then decide whether they want to head on to your blog or site to get the whole recipe.

For most blogs though I find that publishing the full content makes much more sense. This is because subscribers are usually in the habit of reading the entire posts from the aggregators themselves. Unless you really have some content you need to protect or your format is such that your subscribers will see the need to actually head on to your blog then a partial content can actually be a turn off with most of your subscribers ending up not bothering to read entire post most of the time.

People who have personal blogs might say that they just want a venue to express themselves and meet new people on the Web. People with niche blogs may be looking to monetize their blog more. I think, though, that whatever your basic premise for starting a blog is, one thing is common: the more people reading your blog, the better it is.

And how do you get more people to read your blog? One, you could do it manually and ask people to visit it. Two, you can rely on search engines to attract people to your blog. The second point is more effective in the long run. And this is where SEO comes in. The better the results you get from your SEO practices, the more people will discover your blog. And that, I think, answers the question. Yes, SEO does wonders for blogs.

Content is still king
Yeah, this is one of the most used expressions in web development but there is a reason for that. As old and jaded it can be, it still applies. The meat of your web site or blog is the content. No matter which way you look at things, this is true. That is why even before you do all the fancy schmancy SEO stuff, I suggest making sure that you have excellent content to offer. Get that down pat and you will find it easier to “sell” your blog.
