With the internet growing at an enormous rate every day, websites are indeed in stiff competition. Most businesses now opt to go online hoping to raise public awareness of their products and services and improve sales as well. It is, therefore, of utmost importance to give attention to the details you put in in your website- content, graphics, photos, list of categories, etc. Improving your site’s readability is one sure way to get the attention of web users and prospective clients and keep them coming back.

First thing to consider is the fonts you use. Make sure the fonts you utilize are simple and can easily be read, not too small and straining to the eyes during prolonged exposure. A font size of 11 or 12 is best. Keep in mind that web users are fast surfers so you would not want them to change to a different web page right away. Fonts that are cool to the eyes and not difficult to read should be used.

For the titles of your websites and web pages, avoid using very colorful fonts. Better use a combination of black or dark grey or any dark due and a brighter color. Neon colors are a no-no. Choose darker or lighter colors if you must.

It’s best also to use just one font type for one whole page and even for the rest of your web pages. Arial and Verdana are highly recommended for fast reading. Readers usually go for the contents of your site but if at first glance they find the page barely readable because of your fonts plus a crowded page set-up, they will, no doubt, leave instantly.

In creating a website, the trick is to use small graphics meaning just the right size- not too big and not too small. This should be so to enable the graphics to load more quickly when users open a certain web page. Wouldn’t it be nice to see both the contents and the graphics of a website in just one click rather than wait for seconds or even minutes to view the photos?

So, what’s the best photo format to use for faster downloading and uploading? Computer engineers recommend using the JPEG photo format on the web instead of the GIF. The first good reason is photo compression which means that JPEG can make your image files smaller. This capability makes for faster transmission of files across networks and for storing of images. Since time and storage space are of the essence for most web users, the JPEG format is a win-win solution.

The other advantage of JPEG is its ability to store full color information approximately 24 bits per pixel or around 16 million colors. On the one hand, GIF can only take in 8 bits per pixel or around 256 or even fewer colors. And since this digital image retains all the information, what comes out on the screen is the real picture.

With full-color hardware now getting cheaper and more widely used around the world, the use of JPEG photos are far better. What’s more, JPEG is more useful when exchanging images with people using varying display hardware.

Ezines can give you very targeted visitors which means they buy more of your product

If you advertise in the right ezines, you can get fantastic results. However the results will vary a lot depending on the quality of the ezine. What you want is an ezine that people actually read. A quality ezine that delivers valuable content to the reader. And, you want the ezine to be targeted to the same or similar niche as the people who buy your product.

If you get these two things right, then ezine marketing can work very well for you.

Here are 5 tricks that can massively change the response to your ad.

Here are some things you can do to increase the response:

1. Make sure that the ezine has only 2-3 ads per issue. If it has dozens of ads, yours will get lost, and is unlikely to be read.

2. If you can, ask the editor to mention your product or review your product in their newsletter. This will massively increase your sales because it will not “seem” like an advertisement, and instead will look like a recommendation. The editor may not be willing to do this, but if you have a good product, perhaps even giving it for free to the editor to try, they may be willing to do it.

3. Another way to do this is to offer to write an article for the ezine, that happens to mention your product. This way you may even be able to ‘advertise’ in the ezine for free!

4. Make sure you test first with a small number of people. If the ezine you have selected has 50,000 subscribers, ask if you can send your ad to 1-2,000 subscribers first, and then if it works send it to the whole lot. Or even better, try 3 or 4 different ads and send them out to 2,000 subscribers for each ad and track the results. Then use the best performing ad for the whole group.

5. If you can, get the ad at the top of the ezine, as it is likely to have a much better response because more people will see it and read it.

Well here are some words that you will probably encounter as you embark on your SEO journey. Again, thanks to SEOmoz for the list.

back link (inlink, incoming link) Any link into a page or site from any other page or site.

bot (robot, spider, crawler) A program which performs a task more or less autonomously. Search engines use bots to find and add web pages to their search indexes. Spammers often use bots to “scrape” content for the purpose of plagiarizing it for exploitation by the Spammer.

duplicate content Obviously content which is similar or identical to that found on another website or page. A site may not be penalized for serving duplicate content but it will receive little if any Trust from the search engines compared to the content that the SE considers being the original.

keyword – key phrase The word or phrase that a user enters into a search engine.

keyword cannibalization The excessive reuse of the same keyword on too many web pages within the same site. This practice makes it difficult for the users and the search engines to determine which page is most relevant for the keyword.

keyword density The percentage of words on a web page which are a particular keyword. If this value is unnaturally high the page may be penalized.

These are some of the words that you will probably read as you continue visiting this blog. Hopefully, you will also get some use out of knowing these words.

One of the things that Bloglines likes to boast about is the easy sharing of your subscriptions to your friends and just about everyone else who uses Bloglines. There are actually two ways you can share your subscription to everyone – though your blogroll and through the Bloglines website itself.

Blogger’s, even non-Bloglines bloggers, use blogrolls, which are simply lists that link to other blogs. Bloglines makes it very easy to add links to your blogroll by providing a wizard that generates a small piece of HTML that you can add to your blog that will of course load a script from Bloglines showing your subscriptions as your blogroll.

For those who don’t plan on using blogroll’s your subscription list is always available for public viewing at the Bloglines website via the following URL:
http://www.bloglines.com/public/USERNAME
You can of course simply add a link to your subscriptions instead of adding a blogroll or you can just tell people abut it. People will not only be able to view your subscriptions this way but can also export them as an OPML file.

Like in most sites that offer good services nowadays, it is very easy to join Bloglines. All you need to do to create your account is click on the Register link found at the top right portion of the page or the big Sign Up link on the middle of the page, fill in the required information, make sure you’ve read the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and click on the register button. Of course you’ll need to confirm your registration by clicking on the link they send you at your email but other than that it’s virtually fuss-free. Filling in the information actually takes less than five minutes since all you’re required to give is your email address, your password, time zone, and preferred language. This means of course means that you don’t have to divulge any sensitive information.

After registering you can start blogging or arranging your subscriptions. You can also simply browse through other blogs and read some good articles.

Joining the SEOmoz community is a breeze. You don’t have to be a paying client to join and you don’t need to give away any of your personal information. Just click on register type in your email address (used only for confirmation and never for spamming), your desired display name, and your password – and you’re done. Absolutely no fuss. Of course you need to confirm your registration by clicking on the link they send you via email. After that you’ll be free to access parts of SEOmoz and do some stuff non-members can’t.

For those not really interested in taking any active part in the community you have an option of simply browsing through the website’s various pages and reading the blog and YOUmoz entries as well as the articles, which are open for public viewing. You can also subscribe to the blog and YOUmoz to save you from the hassle of checking back though you can be sure they are very frequently updated.

So now that you are part of the Technorati community you want to make sure that your having joined actually benefits you traffic-wise. To increase your rank in Technorati the number of URL’s linking back to you will be counted by them. So again this bring you back to a basic SEO technique – link building.

As always we’ve said that the first thing you really need to do to increase links is give good solid linkable content so that your number of links will grow organically.

You of course do that by:
- keep updated about the latest trends and issues related to your site’s theme
- writing good content that will benefit your target audience
- write experimental posts to see the type your audience will react to more

In short to get more Technorati links your blog has to be good and ought to employ basic SEO.

I have mentioned the importance of Technorati as a traffic determinant. I realize, however, that I haven’t really discussed much about it. So for the my next several posts we’ll be focusing on Technorati.

Technorati is a blog search engine – that is, an Internet Search engine that specializes in searching blog contents. It started with a very simple blogsearch but has since grown into one giant blog site that features an RSS/Reader (Technorati Favorites), Blog trends watcher (Technorati WTF – “Where’s the Fire”), and a has paved way to web-content annotation through the famous technorati tags. Technorati also allows blog authors to “claim” their blogs – to technically declare that they are the real and genuine owners of their respective blogs. Technorati has also popularized the Technorati rank – a quantification of how popular your blog is based on the other blogs that link back to your content. This ranks has proven to be a very strong determinant of the amount of traffic that your blog will have.Technorati. Technorati also lets you add watch to the “blog world” if you want to track specific posts about a particular topic (or events, or person – yourself for example).
