Of Links And SEO

hierarchy_lots_links.jpgYou have heard of links – way too many times, if I am not mistaken. Links here and links there. Inbound links, back links, outbound links, link love – all these terms are used so many times that even a newcomer to blogging and SEO would at least have an idea what a link is. But how is linking important to SEO?

Before we can answer that, let us take a look at the difference between outbound links and inbound links. So what are outbound links? As the name implies, outbound links are the links that originate from your blog and point to other sites. These are important in terms of usability. For example, you write about a news item, it is important that you link out to your source and other sites which provide relevant information. In doing this, you help your users find additional information without them having to do additional searching of their own.

Inbound links, or back links, on the other hand, are links originating from other sites pointing to your blog. Many people believe that inbound links are very important as they are (purportedly) looked upon very highly by Google. That is, the more inbound links that you have, the better you will place in Google rankings and the better your PR would be. Of course, this is not explicitly stated by Google as the exact nature of their algorithm is a secret but the general consensus is that the more inbound links you have, the better off you will be.

Let us take a closer look at links in the next posts.
