Careful with Linking
Many people new to the concept of SEO and who hear that linking is an important factor when doing SEO usually launch into link building with much vigor. Unfortunately a lot of well-intentioned people instead end up doing nothing for their site or worse, actually doing harm due to lack of information.
Everyone knows that links come into the equation, though as in everything that Google does, no one really knows just exactly how. SEO analysts of course have a general idea on how links factor into the equation. According to analysts links, as in everything else, can do you website good or bad.
Link building No-Nos:
- One sure way to do a bad job of link building is by using link farms and Free for All (FFA) Sites. Search engines actually have been known to remove such sites from their index altogether and being linked to such sites is actually a “negative point” for your site.
- Try not to get links from web pages with a page rank of “0″. Although the theory that pages ranked zero are being penalized is still not proven it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Reciprocal links. Forget reciprocal links, they don’t work.
Some good link building efforts include:
- Submitting your site to reputable directories
- Buying one-way links from other sites from text link brokers
- Using Pay-per-click to get incoming links (and traffic!)
- Writing articles to be distributed to other websites for posting. Make sure the website credits your website as article resource at the end or start of the article.
- Submitting press releases
- Setting up a blog with RSS – Blogging as part of your SEO efforts was discussed in the previous post. For help in setting up your own blog you can go to Bloggy Tutorials.
