Google Sitemap and HTML Sitemap

Last time we discussed how sitemaps were helpful for those who want their web pages indexed but how they are not really that essential. When talking about site maps though you must keep in mind that there are basically two types of sitemaps, a Google Sitemap file and an HTML Site Map.

Basically what people are often more familiar with is the HTML Site Map. This is the kind of site map which exists as a page in your website and links to all the other pages in your website. The HTML site map is important especially for huge websites with a lot of pages so that users can have an easier way to navigate between pages.

The Google Sitemap file on the other hand is a file that contains a list of all the URLs of the pages in your website as well as the date wherein each of the pages were last modified. This is the kind of site map that is not generally known since users don’t get to see this file but is the kind that Google is concerned about. If you want a greater chance to be indexed you should submit your Sitemap to Google.

So for those who got confused about my last post note that I was talking about HTML Sitemaps. If you do want a sitemap that will help you pages get indexed then generate a Google Sitemap and submit it via Google Webmasters Central. If you need help setting up your sitemap account you can visit Google’s Webmaster Help Center’s section on Managing Google Sitemap files.
